Zohran Kwame Mamdani (born October 18, 1991) is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. He has been serving as a member of the New York State Assembly representing the 36th district since 2021. Mamdani graduated from Bowdoin College and attended Columbia University.

Mamdani is running as a Democratic candidate in the 2025 New York City mayoral election. His election campaign has been criticized for benefiting from taxpayer funds and support from left-wing nonprofit organizations, avoiding questions about policy implementation, and holding controversial views on taxation and foreign policy.
Early Life
Zohran Mamdani was raised in an “economically privileged family.” Zohran Mamdani’s father, Mahmood Mamdani (79 years old), is a professor at Columbia University. His mother, Mira Nair (67 years old), is an Oscar-nominated film director. Zohran Mamdani’s parents took Zohran Mamdani to various countries around the world.[1]
Political Career
New York State Assembly
Mamdani has been serving in the New York State Assembly since 2021. In the Assembly, he proposed anti-Israel legislation. This includes bill A06101 titled “Not on Our Dime!: Ending New York Funding of Israeli Settler Violence Act.”
2025 New York City Mayoral Election
Mamdani is a Democratic candidate in the 2025 New York City mayoral election. During the election campaign, the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) provided him with $8.75 million in taxpayer funds for the primary election alone, matching his $1,708,494 in individual donations at an 8-to-1 ratio.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) provided millions of dollars worth of in-kind contributions to Mamdani’s election campaign. This includes 1.6 million door-to-door visits and 30,000 volunteers. However, the CFB ignored these contributions.
The CFB has been accused of ignoring apparent violations by Mamdani’s supporters. Additionally, the CFB has been providing meals and transportation with taxpayer funds to mobilize specific Democratic voter groups.
Campaign Finance Controversies
Zohran Mamdani’s campaign collected approximately $13,000 in donations from overseas. These contributions are suspected of being illegal. Mamdani’s campaign returned $9,000. However, $4,000 has not been returned. Additionally, Mamdani’s campaign was still receiving donations from individuals with overseas addresses.[2]
CCP
Zohran Mamdani received over $14,600 in donations from “organizations that help illegal immigrants avoid deportation, among others.” Zohran Mamdani has received funding from George Soros-affiliated organizations (New York Immigration Coalition) and CCP-affiliated organizations (Chinese-American Planning Council). This CCP-affiliated organization (Chinese-American Planning Council) is an organization under federal investigation.[3]
1993 World Trade Center bombing
A super PAC supporting Zohran Mamdani called for “collapsing” America. Additionally, the super PAC supporting Mamdani received $1,000 from Islamic cleric Siraj Wahhaj. This Siraj Wahhaj was an individual who also had connections with “the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.”[4]
Response to Questions
On October 27, 2025, when asked by reporters for details on how to implement his key pledge of rent freezing, Mamdani avoided a clear answer. He stated that he would maximize his authority as mayor over the Rent Guidelines Board, but said nothing about countermeasures against Mayor Eric Adams’ policies.
Jay Martin, executive director of the New York Apartment Association, criticized Mamdani, stating that from the time he began proposing rent freezing, he clearly did not understand the role of the Rent Guidelines Board.
Political expert Bill Cunningham stated that the quality required of a New York City mayor is decisiveness, and took issue with Mamdani’s indecisive attitude.
Mamdani’s election campaign did not respond to coverage on this matter, and even city council members have begun to create ripples.[5]
Feasibility of the pledge
At the first mayoral debate at Rockefeller Center on October 17, 2025, Mamdani could not clearly explain the funding source for $10 billion in social policies including free childcare, public transportation, and rent freezing, leaving questions about the feasibility of his pledges. Mamdani exposed his weaknesses at this debate.[6]
Political Positions
Taxation and Economic Policy
Mamdani announced a tax increase policy for wealthier white neighborhoods. He was criticized as racist for advocating a tax increase policy limited to white people.
In response to criticism, Mamdani argued that the tax burden on white people is insufficient, and stated that the tax increase policy limited to white people is to correct the fairness of the tax burden.
Additionally, Mamdani clearly stated that billionaires should not exist.[7]
Unattainable election pledges
Mamdani’s tax increase policy limited to white people has been criticized by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Democratic lawmaker Laura Gillen took issue with Mamdani’s pledges as unachievable.
If Mamdani’s policies are implemented, there is a risk that private investment will retreat as rent control and free public housing obligations expand.
High-income earners and businesses are likely to relocate to places where real estate investment is easier, such as Florida, reducing New York City’s tax revenue.
As a result, New York City’s finances may go bankrupt. Because the goals exceed practical reality, Mamdani’s redistribution program will meet the same end as socialist states in history because the goals exceed reality. This is a repetition of history.[8]
$200 million in taxes
According to a report by Open The Books, since fiscal year 2021, over approximately $200 million in taxes have been used for “medical expenses for illegal immigrants, among other things.” Taxpayer funds were being used for medical care and education of illegal immigrants.
Payment for “medical expenses for illegal immigrants, among other things” was in the form of grants to NIH (National Institutes of Health) and HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration), among others, with approximately $200 million in taxes used for illegal immigrants.
Meanwhile, New York Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries stated that taxes “are not being paid for medical care for illegal immigrants, among other things.”[9]
Foreign Policy
Mamdani shared pro-Hamas posts from New York City Democratic Socialists and called Israel’s actions “genocide.”
However, when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, he repeatedly refused to condemn Hamas itself.
In 2020 and 2021, Zohran Kwame Mamdani actively supported the BDS (anti-Israel) movement on social media.
The rhetoric intensified in 2024, calling the events in Rafah a “massacre,” condemning Prime Minister Netanyahu as a “war criminal,” and asserting that Israel’s actions were “genocide.”
Regarding 9/11, from 2021 to 2024, he repeated nearly identical posts every September 11th, criticizing America’s war on terror.
Mamdani received the maximum legal donation from prominent Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, and the author claims she has connections with extremists.[10]
Controversies
The New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) has been accused of favoring Zohran Mamdani using taxpayer funds.[11]
