**概要
海外デベロッパーReverge Labs開発の2D対戦格闘ゲーム。
元は同人ゲームとして製作されていたが、後に家庭用ゲームとしての開発にシフトした。
日本のアニメ調と海外のカートゥーン調が調和したグラフィック、非常に滑らかに動くアニメと随所に散りばめられたパロディが特徴。
登場キャラはほぼ全て人外の少女で、[[カプコン]]の「[[ヴァンパイア]]」[[シリーズ]]を思わせる作風である。
2013年には待望の日本語版＆PC版の配信、アーケード版も稼働予定と日本でも着実に人気が上がってきている。
ゲーム内における遊び心と作りこみが異様に凝っており、「元歌姫である事を生かして歌でこちらに注目させ、少しの間強制的に1画面固定にしてしまう」スクィグリーや「レバーとボタンの配置を覚えて練習すれば、トランペットで自分の弾きたい曲を自由に演奏できてしまう技をもつ」ビッグバンドなど各キャラのバックボーンと密接した個性のフリーダムさは枚挙にいとまがない。
作曲には「[[悪魔城ドラキュラ]]」シリーズで著名な[[山根ミチル]]が参加しており、本作のホラーチックな雰囲気の演出に一役買っている。
そしてPS4及びPSVitaにおいて『&bold(){スカルガールズ 2ndアンコール}』が[[アークシステムワークス]]より発売された。
今作品初となるパッケージ版の登場に加えて、日本語吹き替えでのフルボイスも搭載。
より一層スカルガールズの世界の広がりを見せている。
