They admitted inventing its kinky features, or rather deliberately mistranslating them from the original gossip magazine. |
In fact, this is far from the general Japanese' behavior or sense of worth. |

Married women revel in extramarital sex
Shukan Bunshun 1/2-9 By Mark Schreiber
Not far from the north exit of Tokyo's Ikebukuro Station, on the first floor of a white apartment building, is a seikan massaji(erotic massage) parlor that caters exclusively to female clientele.
In private rooms, the establishment's handsome, young male employees cover the entire body of female customers with a film of oil, and then let their fingers do the walking over the their erogenous zones.
Battery-powered devices are also used on occasion.
The cost for a two-hour session, at which customers are assured that they will reach orgasm at least once, is 20,000 yen.
The masseurs also perform outcall service to hotels and homes.
While not included in the above rates, sexual intercourse is also available.
The manager of the establishment tells Shukan Bunshun that nearly all his customers request it as a part of the service.
At this particular establishment, 70 to 80 percent of the customers are married women.
To describe the attitude of these women, Shukan Bunshun uses the term fukigen-zoku(the discontented tribe).
“Quite a few of them come to us at the request of their husbands, who want them to enjoy a good time,” the manager of the massage parlor tells Bunshun.
“But recently, many married women have been calling on their own.
The other day, a young woman got turned on by reading about us in a women's magazine.
She showed the article to her mother, who called for an appointment.”
The service has been in business for two years, but from around January 1996, it enjoyed a sudden spurt in demand.
The vast majority of its clientele are housewives in their 30s and 40s, who seek the physical intimacy that is missing from their marriage.
Shukan Bunshun's reporter is convinced the discontented tribe is in open rebellion, with infidelity becoming rampant among Japan's married women.
The article introduces Yoshiko (a pseudonym). Married for 11 years to the staff member of a trading company, she has a daughter in the third year of primary school.
She admits to Bunshun's reporter that for the past two years she has been having an affair with a single man six years her junior.
"He does everything he can to make me feel good," the women says.
"At first I held back, but I've become bolder in my lovemaking.
All I think about is how we're going to do it the next time we meet."
"I don't dislike my husband or anything like that," she confesses.
"And it's not that I'm dissatisfied with his lovemaking. I enjoy it.
But I think there's something wrong with the idea that just because I'm married I can't have sex with any other man for the rest of my life."
Meanwhile, a 41-year old housewife who feels her husband of 18 years no longer treats her as a woman picks up men through a telephone club once or twice a month.
She admits to feeling pangs of guilt over what she does, but blames his lack of affection as well.
Helping to generate interest in extramarital behavior are several glossy color magazines with names like "Wife and Mature Woman Report" and "Beautiful Wives Club."
Bunshun quotes Katsutoshi Yamashita, a member of the editorial board at Shukan Asahi magazine, who suggests the "discontented tribe" is growing in numbers "because women who want to feel romantic emotions have begun to take action.
"Women who have been distanced from heart-throbbing emotions feel they are losing their femininity,"says the editor.
"And that drives them to other men."
"More married women are working and have economic independence," explains journalist Atsushi Mizoguchi.
"They have more opportunities to encounter different kinds of men.
Even full-time housewives have chances to meet men through telephone clubs and e-mail.
And more women feel they can exert control over their sex lives of their own accord.
These times are becoming increasingly difficult for men."
Yamashita thinks that the women most likely to engage in such activities are those with husbands who see their wives as no more than benriya (girl Fridays), and with husbands who apply a double standard, regularly cheating on their wives themselves but never willing to tolerate infidelity in turn.
What about your wife, Bunshun asks its male readers.
Is there a chance she is also one of the members of this growing tribe of the discontented?(MS)
