They admitted inventing its kinky features, or rather deliberately mistranslating them from the original gossip magazine. |
In fact, this is far from the general Japanese' behavior or sense of worth. |

Married women champing at the bit for a bit 2002,3,8
Spa! 3/12 By Cheryl Chow
The sweet scent of milky flesh, the pure fragrance of soap...
Redolent, ripe sexuality drives the men wild with lust.
Or maybe it's just the wish to be embraced in the homey bosom of good ol' mom.
Either way, young men's desire for the "mature woman," especially the "hitozuma" --- the married woman --- has been the staple of popular fiction in Japan.
This attraction, declares a writer of porno romance, is engraved in the very DNA of the male.
Just take a peek at the X-rated corner of the rental video store and you'll see a special section of "mature woman porn," the sexually ripened woman as the erotic target of young men.
Comments a 25-year-old banker, "The seductive element is the sexual frustration the housewife might be feeling because her husband neglects her. It just seems to me that she'd be having all kinds of erotic thoughts while doing housework."
Likewise, a 26-year-old ad agent says, "The married woman next door either doesn't want to be touched by her husband, or he refuses to. So of course, she doesn't have her guard up like young women --- in fact, she's let her barriers completely down."
This, then, is the popular equation: a married woman is a perpetually sexually dissatisfied one.
Moreover, she has time on her hands during the day, the "witching hours" when she could succumb to her body's cravings, writes Spa! (3/12).
Is this widespread notion myth or reality, though? To find out, the magazine randomly questioned 200 married women between the ages of 20 to 39.
Out of those, 74 replied that they were not satisfied with their sex lives.
And this frustration began when they were married, say all 74.
According to the definition laid down in 1994 by the Japan Association of Sexual Sciences, more than half of the respondents would be considered a "sexless couple."
In other words, a couple who refrains from sex with each other for more than a month without special reasons, and with the likelihood that this state of affairs would continue.
Yet, despite the lack of bedroom action at home, the married "hitozuma" were far from being loose or adulterous.
In fact, only eight admitted to having an affair with another men, and 38 of the irregulars wished they could get it on more often with their husbands. (One caveat, though, when the question was changed to, "Have you had sex even once with a man other than your husband?" 44 of the women answered "Yes.")
The informal survey corroborates the popular image of the married woman as sexually hungry.
From a medical point of view, it also makes sense, writes Spa!.
According to the director of a Tokyo clinic, too much stress from work lowers the male libido; meanwhile, the women experience only a slight decline in desire after the age 30.
So of course, she would be frustrated.
The producer of a popular late night TV show, who has auditioned many housewives for his show, says, "The word 'hitozuma' has a sort of retro feel. And there's a boom in the search for healing. The program reflects these trends. I myself wasn't looking for nudity, I just wanted to bring out the mood, the life styles, of these married women."
The program features men who are troubled about something.
They are invited into the house of a married woman.
She listens to his problems, and finally, she takes him to the family bath and scrubs his back for him.
Thanks, mom, for the rub down. I got to bare my chest and spit it out.
