概要

コールオブデューティーシリーズ第9作目、『Call of Duty: Black Ops』の続編。制作は『COD:BO』や『COD:WaW』を手がけたTreyarch。
今作では東西冷戦時代末期80年代が舞台の、前作主人公でもあるアレックス・メイソン編。シリーズ初、2025年の近未来が舞台の、新主人公デイビッド・メイソン編の2つの時代からなる2部構成。
近未来の架空の武器・兵器が登場したり、これまたシリーズ初のマルチエンディングを採用するなど、シリーズの中でもとりわけ異端な作品である。
日本ローカライズは『COD:BO』や『COD:MW3』に引き続きスクウェア・エニックス。

作曲はゲームコンポーサーのジャック・ウォール氏が担当。
メインテーマは、ゲーム好きが高じて、ミュージシャンのトレント・レズナー氏が担当する。氏はコールオブデューティーシリーズのファンなのだとか。
