　[[リゾナンター]]のサブリーダー的位置づけにありながら、同時に[[ダークネス]]のスパイであるという設定がほぼ基本となっている。
　[[まとめサイト]]に収録された作品における初登場は、[[光井愛佳]]の秘めた能力｢[[心の浄化]]｣に触れた作品[[［Mitsui］(01)255>http://resonant.pockydiary.net/archives/4.html]]であり、この時点で既にスパイとしての姿が描かれている。里沙がスパイであるという設定はリゾスレが発生する元となった｢リゾナントブルーを１位にするスレ｣の時点で為されており、それが多くの住人の琴線に触れたのか、その後もスパイ・新垣里沙に焦点を当てた作品が[[［Niigaki］(01)337 >http://resonant.pockydiary.net/archives/30.html]]を始めとして次々と上げられ、序盤にして基本設定として完全に定着した。前述の初登場作品においては、両親を人質に取られているが故にやむなくスパイ行為をしていると思しき描写になっているが、後続の作品群の中にあってはそれに類する設定はあまり多く見られず、(組織の意向はあるものの)自身の意思によるとするものがほとんどになっている。
　里沙を中心に据えた作品は非常に多く投下されながらもその能力設定はなかなか為されなかった中、[[第１話>「リゾナントブルーAnother Versからストーリーを想像するスレ　第１話」（全ての始まり）]]の終盤に上げられた[[［Niigaki］(01)780『関空発→羽田　ボーイング機内』>http://resonant.pockydiary.net/archives/15.html]]において付与された[[精神干渉]](同作中においては｢マインドコントロール｣)は、後に複数の能力設定が発生する他メンバーとは異なり、彼女の唯一無二の能力として完全に根付いた。同作中で里沙自身が｢卑しい・薄汚い｣と嫌悪するその能力が、既に定着していたスパイという設定とある意味で調和したからかもしれない。また、｢精神干渉｣という能力そのものが非常に広くとらえることの可能なものであったこともその一因と言えるだろうか。鋼線やピアノ線を操る、記憶を消去・改竄する、他者の意識内に潜行(サイコダイブ)するなど、各[[作者]]・作品によって最も幅広いバリエーションで使用されている能力であると言っていい。
　その人となりについても当然各作者・作品ごとに様々であるが、現実世界の新垣里沙同様に、小姑キャラ・ツッコミキャラを始め、基本的にしっかり者キャラとしての描かれ方が多い。ただし、スパイというその役割上、比較的冷静な一面が付与されているとは言えるかもしれない。
　また、[[第３話>「リゾナントブルーAnother Versからストーリーを想像するスレ　第３話」（胸の高鳴る方へ）]]というかなり序盤の段階で、リゾナンターを離れてダークネスに帰還するという話([[［Niigaki］(03)295『さよならリゾナント』>http://resonant.pockydiary.net/archives/81.html]])が描かれ、そこから派生した作品が多数上がったことから、｢スパイ行為をやめ、完全に仲間となった里沙｣としてのストーリーもその後数多く綴られることとなった。

　[[リゾナンター]]サイドでは、(現実世界で)同期メンバーであり関係性の深い[[高橋愛]]との関係を描いた作品やはり圧倒的に多い。その他のメンバーとの絡みも一応満遍なく網羅はしている。ただし、現実世界に影響されたと思しきメンバーとしてはガキカメコンビの[[亀井絵里]]、“相方”こと[[久住小春]]と、ストーリー上の流れとして[[光井愛佳]]あたりとの共演が少し多くなっているが、その他のメンバーに関しては１対１の絡みはさほど多くない。
　その立場上、[[ダークネス]]サイドとの関わりは多い。中でも、[[安倍なつみ]]は現実同様｢尊敬する人｣として描かれることが多く、スパイ行為の理由となっている作品も複数ある。また、[[石川梨華]]とは“裏切者”と“粛清人”という立場から、直接対峙することになる作品がいくつか書かれている。現実世界で近しい関係である[[吉澤ひとみ]]、[[紺野あさ美]]あたりと深い関係性を持っている作品も多いと言えるだろうか。[[飯田圭織]]や[[保田圭]]といった、他のリゾナンターメンバーがあまり接触しない人物と対話する話もいくつかあり、当然ではあるが最も“顔の広い”存在であると言えるかもしれない。
