**概要
2D系「ソニック」シリーズの1作で、シリーズ初期頃のクラシック系のソニックを意識した作品。
製作は海外のインディーズデベロッパーが担当している。いわゆるファンメイド的な作品に近い。
『[[初代>ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ]]』・『[[2>ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ2]]』・『[[CD>ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグCD]]』・『[[3>ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ3]]』・『[[ナックルズ>ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ3]]』からのステージがアレンジされて登場し、さらにオリジナルステージも登場。
BGMはポルトガル出身の作曲家Tee Lopes氏が担当。過去作からのアレンジ曲も収録されている。
2018年にはPS4とNintendo Switchで追加要素を加えた『ソニックマニア・プラス』が発売。追加曲もあり。
パッケージ版の封入特典にはサントラが付属しており、収録曲は「追加曲+オリジナル曲+ボーナストラック」と豪華なものになっている。
