[ Helherron Help ]
[Welcome to Helherron]
Welcome to Helherron! This is a game for those who like old-school fantasy role playing games. My mission is to keep this great game alive on the twenty-first century.
In Helherron, you creat a party of eight characters. Your mission is to - like in most fantasy RPGs - defeat the evil.
Helherron is made in Finland. Check Credits from the main menu screen to see the Have fun!

[Story]
The isle of Helherron is at chaos. Beloved King Krolh has been kidnapped. Nobody knows by whom, but the legends are wild. The villagers tell, still shaking in terror, that it was done by dark, winged man-like creatures that took off to the sky shrieking, with poor King Krolh with them.
And worse yet, the isles seem to be cursed somehow. It's hard to determine how, but you sure can feel it. It hangs in the sir heavy, like a Shadow of Death, and you can see it shimmering bloody red in the horizon of the night sky.
The villagers tell that just latey, after King Krolh was kidnapped, their villages have been raided by grotesque cross-breeds between man and beast. Most apparently that is also due to the Curse places over Helherron and it's sister isles.
But the worst is yet to be told. The Divine Sceptre, given to the people of Helherron by the Divine Cleric Order and crafted by Creator itself, which was at King Krolh's possession, is now missing too. It was most apparently stolen at the same time King Krolh was kidnapped.
Thus, the only hope for Helherron is to send a party of heroes to find the Divine Sceptre so that order and peace can be once again returned.

[Getting started]
Before you can play Helherron, you have to create a party. Your party consists of eight characters. Each character has its personal attributes: name, race, skills and more. It's up to you to choosewhat kind of characters you want to create.
To start a new game, choose "New Game" from the main menu (the menu you see when you start Helherron). You will have to type a name for your party. After that, you will create eight characters.
Before creating your characters, you should plan your party. Do you want to have many warriors or spellcasters? Do you want use archers? Do you want to use half-spellcasters like bards or rangers? If you are a beginner, we suggest you to take 4 warriors (one of them could use
bow), 2 mages and 2 priests.
For each character, you first choose its race. The race affects your character's skills storngly. After your character's race is chosen, choose its character class.
Your characters also have eight very important basic attributes. They are strength, dexterity, intellogence, constitution, wisdom, willpower, charisma and learning. They are affected by race and class.
After you have chosen race and class, accepted basic attributes, you will have to pick an image for your character. You can choose from a large collection of different images.
The last step of character generation is the Skill screen. This shows how skilled your new character is in various things. For example, if your character weapon.
If you aren't satisfied with your character's skills, you can reject this character by pressing 'r'. If you accept this character, press enter to continue to the next character. After you have created all the eight characters, the game starts.

[Spells]
Spells play a very important role in Helherron. There are two types of spells: magic spells and prayer spells. They differ in many ways. Magic spells often utilize the basic elements of nature or attack mind and soul. Prayer spells, in contrast, are often healings or blessings.
To cast a spell, press the m key. The spell casting screen will appear. All spells that your character is able to cast are listed. Casting is very easy - just use the arrow keys to choose the spell you want to cast and hit enter. Notice that on the bottom of the screen there is important information about the selected spell like its name, required mana, and chance to succeed (%).
Before casting, you should consider several things.
1) If the chance of succeesfully casting the spell is very low (say < 50), you most likely just waste mana and you might end up having a stunned or confused spellcaster.
2) If you use more mana than needed for the spell, it will be cast more efficiently.
For exaple, a fire dart will cause double damage if you use 8 magic points instead of 4. The , and . keys are used to adjust mana usage. Notice that the more mana you use the more difficult casting becomes.
Some spells (spells like magic armor, holy
shield, haste, etc...) can be cast on your whole party at the same time. This is done by choosing the spell and hitting Shift+a. Naturally you nees mana for every character of your party. Please remember that this is of course not possible during combats and when there are hostile creatures nearby your party.
[Skills]
Yore characters have various skills which indicate how well they can perform certain tasks like melee combat, casting spells, etc. These skills get higher as you gain experience levels.
Weapon skills affect your chance to hit the enemy (the lower the skill, the more likely you are to miss) and also damage caused by the attack.
Alchemy: this skill can be used to create magical potions. The keyboard command to use this skill is 'A'.
Backstabbing: in Helherron it makes great difference whether you hit your enemies from their front or from their back. Hits from back are always extremely powerful, but this skill makes these attacks even more lethal. Thieves are very good in this.
Blacksmith: you can use this skill to repair broken items. The keyboard command to use this skill is 'B'.
Music: bards are known as the great musicians whose melodies sometimes have weird effects on their listeners. This skill brings magic to your melodies.
Scribring: this can be used to write magical scrolls. The keyboard command to use this skill is 'S'.
Shield: your character's ability to use a shield. This skill increases your character's Defence Bonus, thus making it more difficult for enemies to hit you. Characters without a shield do not get any advantage from this skill.
Stealth: normally you lose your movement points if you are surrounded by enemies in combat. This skill increases your chances of such a thing not happening.
Throwing: this skill is your character's ability to throw weapons like spears and daggers. Affect your chance to hit as well as damage.
Two weapon combat: this skills helps you when you fight using two one-handed weapons at the same time.
[Trading items]
While adventuring, you will surely finf items that are valuable. You may want to sell them to get money.
To sell item, first talk to a shopkeeper. Make sure that the character that starts the conversation is your merchant (his/her Merchant skill is the highest in your party). Then ask the shopkeeper to trade items with you. Inventory screen will appear.
Then choose the character who is carrying the item(s) you want to sell. This can be done with the . and key , keys. After that, simply choose the item you want to sell and press 's'.
Also don't forget that you can only sell to shopkeepers that are likely to be interested in your items. This means that you can't sell gems to a blacksmith.
Blacksmiths usually buy weapons and armours and nothing else.
[Tips]
- If you find herbs or mushrooms that temporarily increase your spell skill, read spellbooks under the effect of them.
- Very aggressive combat tactics is perfect for golems.
- While moving in the wilderness, always use road if possible. This saves time and you may encounter merchants with good items for sale.
- Do not underrate shield spells (e.g. Fire Shield). For example, if your enemy has a lot of mages that are casting firebolts, Fire Shield may be the only way to keep your own spellcasters alive!
