**概要
minoriの5作目にあたる作品。
『ef - a fairy tale of the two.』は作品の総称。テーマは「minori's 4th challenge about "Will"」。
前編の『the first tale.』が2006年、後編の『the latter tale.』が2008年にそれぞれ発売された。
2007年＆2008年にアニメ化もされている。アニメ版『ef - a tale of memories.（第一期）』『ef - a tale of melodies.（第二期）』はシャフト制作の名作アニメとして高い評価を得ており、作品の知名度として高いのはこっちである。
音楽は[[Falcom Sound Team jdk]]に所属していたことでも知られる天門（白川篤史）氏と柳英一朗氏による作曲。
主にピアノやヴァイオリンをベースとした美しい旋律の曲が多く、全体を通して高い評価を得ている。
しかしサウンドトラック（Alato）の入手は今では困難なものとなっており、知名度の低さの一因である。
それらの楽曲の中で、アニメ版でも使用された『悠久の翼』の人気は高く、多くの店で収録CDが即日完売し、のちに再プレス版が発売された。
そして本作のデモムービーにも使われている『the first tale.』『the latter tale.』のオープニング映像は、アニメ映画監督として有名な&font(b){新海誠}氏が手がけている。
そのオープニング映像はパソコンADVのの中でも破格の完成度・非常にクオリティの高いものであるため、一見の価値アリ。
なお主題歌の曲名は全て頭文字が「e」と「f」になっており、繋げると『ef』となる（悠久の翼→eternal feather）。
また『ever forever』の最初の音はEとFのコードになっている。（アニメ版主題歌『euphoric field』『ebullient future』も同様）
