Today, electricity and magnetism are close to us, and these support our life. For example, the force of electricity and magnets set machines in motion. Particularly the discovery of radio wave was a revolution for technology. However, it has been long time to discover radio wave. Physicists say the physics of electricity and magnetism electrodynamics. The development of our life thanks to electrodynamics, and the history divide three parts: Greece, the Renaissance, from 18th to 19th century.
In 6th century B.C. Thales explain the force of magnet the first in the world, but it was not scientifically. Electricity was discovered in about 3rd century B.C. However they felt these forces magically. For instance, fortune-tellers used magnets, and they used magnets to check the chastity of their lovers. Great philosophers such as Platon and Aristoteles said magnets have spirits, and they argued the spirits move iron. In any case, electricity and magnetism was mysterious in those days. Furthermore, people continued to believe these recognitions of the forces until the Renaissance.
In the Renaissance, a revolution was happened for physics. It was occurred by Galileo and Newton. This thing don’t relate to electrodynamics. First of all, Galileo study fall of material. Till then, people believe a heavy material fall faster than light one, but Galileo’s experiment showed that heavy one was as fast as light one. This was the first physics experiment in the world, and Galileo show the world that experiment tells us the truth. Secondly, Newton made new theory mechanics. Mechanics is the first physics theory with using mathematics. Newton argued scientists that mathematics help us to understand nature, and the physics theory gives us the predictions. For example, Newton’s theory predicted Uranus, and the British astronomer Willium Hershel discovered it in 1781. That is to say, Galileo and Newton showed the people experiment and mathematics are very important to under stand truth and nature. Then, physicists try to make theory about electricity and magnetism. In those days, the people already didn’t believe the magical things about electrodynamics, but they were not able to understand the mystery of electricity and magnetism. The course was that they didn’t have the technology to measure electricity and magnetism, and the technology occurred from the late 18th to 19th century.
In 1760, Mayer discovered a law of the force of magnets, and the law was written in math. Furthermore, in 1769 Coulomb discovered a law of electricity written in math. However these laws show only the measure of these forces. The laws don’t say the behavior is the essence for electrodynamics. Finally, physicists complete electrodynamics.
