Is maintenance really important?
Yes. The life expectancy of the components and the safety of the user depend on proper maintenance. While the evolution of materials' and lubricants' technologies has reduced the number of service operations required, the continuing importance of proper maintenance cannot be underestimated.
For which components is maintenance particularly important?
Chain, hubs and headset. However, periodic lubrication and overall checking of Ergopower levers, cables and casings, derailleurs, brakes and pedals is also important to insure durability and performance.
How often should the bike be serviced?
Campagnolo components each require different maintenance schedules. Check the instruction sheets or manuals for the individual components to learn more about the recommended maintenance schedule.
Campagnolo recommends that, at a minimum, your bike be serviced by a qualified mechanic at the following intervals:
- First service after 100 km.
- Second service after 1000 km.
- Under normal conditions, your bicycle should then be serviced every 2000/3000 km. However, particular conditions, such as a heavy rider, rain, dust, competitive use, salted winter roads, etc. may require more frequent servicing. For example, it could be necessary to clean and lubricate the chain after every ride. Please consult your authorized Campagnolo representative to select a schedule that is best for you.
What tools are needed to work on Campagnolo components?
Campagnolo produces a wide variety of very high quality tools designed specifically for our products. See your retailer for the tool that is just right for the job.
Although other manufacturers market various tools, there are too many on the market for us to be able to assess their quality or appropriateness for use on Campagnolo products.
Moreover, even though we could test one tool we can never certify that it will always be right for the job because the tools and/or products may be modified, and we will not know how that modification will impact the effectiveness of the tool.
How does one perform correct maintenance on a Campagnolo chain?
Avoid using any solvents that would attack the metals and/or the surface treatments of the chain. Clean chain regularly with a dry, clean cloth. Lubricate the chain with only high-quality chain oils specifically for bicycles.
Last year I weighed 80 kg and now I weigh 83 kg. Can I still use Campagnolo products, or am I too heavy?
There is no clear dividing line defining when someone is "too heavy" for Campagnolo products. Many factors need to be considered.
Campagnolo products were designed for "racing" type bicycles used on smooth asphalt roads or tracks. Any other use of Campagnolo products is improper.
Magnified stresses and loads caused by a "heavy" rider, coupled with forces from an uneven road surface, greatly shorten the lifespan of Campagnolo products, especially if your bicycle is equipped with tires, wheels, or stiff frames that are poor at absorbing shocks and vibrations.
The weight of the rider, type of bike and the style and conditions of use are all critical factors affecting the lifespan of your product.
Technical knowledge, experience, common sense, and prudence are required. If you weigh 80 kg or more, you must be especially vigilant and have your bicycle inspected regularly for any evidence of cracks, deformation, or other signs of fatigue or stress. Check with your mechanic to discuss whether the components you selected are suitable for your use, and to determine the frequency of inspections.
When do I have to replace the chain?
As described in the instruction sheet, you have to use a high precision (0,01 mm resolution) caliper gauge to measure, in different points of the chain, the length between six links (as indicated in the figure on the instruction sheet) and if even one of the measurement is longer than 132.60 mm the chain must be replaced.
Where can I find more information regarding maintenance?
The instruction sheet supplied with each product has maintenance instructions.
