The story of Avery’s exploits was quickly mythologized, filling sailors with dreams of adventure. This romanticized story gave men a false sense of life at sea and began the pirate stereotype that remains today.

Letters of Marque commissioned privateers to legally attack and plunder enemy ships, merchant or otherwise. This essentially legalized piracy during wartime. This is a sample letter from the 18th century.
