Overview

Level Explanation:
LEVEL: MATH
1ST GRADE: MIDDLE SCHOOL
TEACHER: ANGELICA WILKINS
DESCRIPTION: Angelica is a kind teacher that loves teaching students!
But remember don't make mistakes, she goes mad really easily.

Unofficial Difficulty Chart:
Boi Mode ★☆☆☆☆
Default Mode ★★☆☆☆
Brainiac Mode ★★★☆☆

  • Math Level is the first level in story mode.
  • As it is the first level, the characters and notebook settings are relatively easy. Additionally, the map is not complex, the guidance is clear, and the darkness is minimal.
    • Overall, the difficulty level is relatively easy. Use this level to get accustomed to the controls, various systems, and items.
  • This level is heavily influenced by the Math Level from AEwVS, with several elements that seem to pay homage to it. Playing AEwVS first might give you a little something to smile about.
    • The fact that it starts with math is one such example.

Notebook

+ Image Included
  • When you open the notebook, a software called Brain Upgratonator will launch and appear on the screen.
  • In this level of the notebook, you need to solve the displayed equations and enter the answers. Click on the “Your Answer” box, enter your answer, and then press the CHECK button.
    • Note that pressing the Enter key or similar will not work; you must click the CHECK button.
  • Each notebook contains 5 questions, with a total of 20 notebooks. Additionally, the 5th question cannot be solved, so any input will result in an incorrect answer.
    • Unlike AEwVS, the difficulty level of the notebooks remains fixed from start to finish.
  • The higher the selected difficulty level, the more challenging the questions will be.
    • In Boi mode, the questions are in the form of “number =,” so you can solve them without calculating.
    • In Default mode, the questions involve adding single-digit numbers once, so a little calculation is required, but it is not difficult.
    • In Brainiac mode, the questions vary in difficulty depending on the question number. All of the questions are complex, and depending on the question, it may take a little time to solve them.
      • The first question is three additions of single-digit numbers.
      • The second question is three multiplications of single-digit numbers.
      • The third question is two divisions of single-digit numbers.
      • The fourth question is two subtractions of single-digit numbers.
  • Note that while division by zero is undefined in mathematics, in this game, answering with 0 is considered correct.
  • Additionally, the value “TRUNCATE” displayed in the top-left corner of the screen indicates that “digits below this decimal place should be truncated when answering.”
    • However, this value remains unchanged at 0 in practice, so it is sufficient to remember that decimal places should be truncated when answering.
    • The reason I wrote “in practice” is because the value for the fifth question is 666. As an aside, if you answer 666 at this point, no sound will play and you will be marked incorrect. This is a reproduction of the AEwVS specification, where performing this action on all notebooks leads to the 666 ending, but there is no such branching here. This specification was removed in version 1.4.0 and later of the remastered version.
    • In the remastered version 1.4.0 and later, the specification has been changed so that you must round the answer instead of truncating the decimal places, and the TRUNCATE value also changes.
      • However, as of version 1.4.2, there is a bug that basically prevents you from entering decimals, so if the TRUNCATE value is not 0, you will inevitably get the wrong answer.
  • Note that only the last notebook displays a number at the bottom of the notebook. Details will be explained later, but this number is necessary to clear the level, so it is important to remember it.
  • As a side note, the version of Brain Upgratonator is displayed in the bottom right corner, and this version corresponds to the ACHS version. In the latest version 1.1.0, v1.1.0 is displayed.
    • However, this specification applies to versions alpha 0.0.5 and later, and in earlier versions, it displayed 2.0.
    • In the remastered version, it now displays REMASTERED instead. Additionally, in version 1.4.0 and later, this display has been removed, and only Brain Upgranator Remastered v6.9 is displayed at the top of the screen. And seeming to take a mistake, the name subtly changed.
  • In version 1.4.0 of the remastered version, the notebook screen was completely redesigned, and various elements were changed.
    • First, the appearance was changed to resemble the math notebook screen in the new version of AEwVS. Additionally, all sound effects were changed, and like other subject notebooks, sound effects now play when the notebook is opened.
    • There have also been changes to the specifications. As mentioned above, not only has the TRUNCATE specification been changed, but it is now also possible to answer by pressing the Shift key.
    • In summary, it can be said that the changes have brought the math notebook closer to the new version of AEwVS. It is clear that this was used as a reference.

  • When the level begins, Angelica, the teacher, will greet you. After the greeting, she will tell you to go to the classroom and solve the questions in your notebook, so follow her instructions and head to the classroom.
    • There are multiple doors, but only one of them can be opened, so enter that one.
  • In the classroom, there is a tablet-shaped notebook. Use it to display the questions and solve them normally. Note that Angelica will give you advice while you are solving the questions, so it is a good idea to listen to her the first time.
  • If you answer a question incorrectly, Angelica will become angry and start chasing you. Once the chase begins, the doors that were previously closed will open, and the game will finally start. The player must escape from her pursuit while collecting all 20 notebooks.
  • At first, you may be surprised by the vastness of the map and the many route branches, but in reality, most of them are straight paths or merge into other routes, so take your time and memorize the map.
    • Also, this level has clear guidance, and in many cases, you can see where the door leads by looking above it. It's a good idea to refer to this when you're not used to it.
  • In this level, a skeleton-like janitor named Jimmy patrols the hallways at high speed, and if you are caught by him, you will be carried away. You can break free from his grasp by rapidly pressing the space bar, so unless there is a specific reason not to, break free immediately.
    • In some areas, you can use techniques such as being pushed from behind to move quickly, but for beginners, it is generally better to break free immediately.
  • Additionally, there is a being named Principal that patrols the school with an appearance resembling a monochrome illustration of a person. If you run in the hallway, eat food, or litter within his line of sight, it will be considered a violation of school rules, and you may be taken to the detention room. It is difficult to detect his presence, so it is best to avoid these actions in general.
    • To clarify the detailed specifications: violations of school rules only occur during lesson time. During break time, performing the relevant actions will not be considered a violation. Immediately after starting a level, it is lesson time, but the bell rings every 3 minutes, alternating between the two states. If you can keep track of the time well, you can perform the relevant actions without risk. However, playing while keeping track of this is quite difficult, so beginners probably don't need to worry about it too much.
      • Starting with version 1.4.0 of the remastered version, you can now check which time period you're in by approaching a bell. This makes it easier for beginners to play while being mindful of the time.
    • If you are taken to the detention room, you will be forced to stay there for a certain amount of time. The detention time is short at first, but it increases each time you are caught, and eventually, you will be killed by him. In any case, it is best to avoid being caught.
  • In addition, there is a ghost-like entity named Samara in the room labeled “Samara's lair,” and players must periodically visit her to cut her hair. She is usually friendly, but she finds her hair, which grows at an incredible speed, annoying, and if left unattended, she will become enraged and come after you to kill you. Therefore, be sure to remember to return to her regularly.
    • Samara's room is located near the entrance to the long corridor of Corpus C, after proceeding along the Corpus A route from the starting point.
    • In the remastered version, Samara has been renamed “Girly,” and the room's name has been changed to “Girly's Lair.”
  • From the starting point, you can access four routes: Corpus A, B, C, and D. However, it is recommended to proceed via Corpus B.
    • Corpus B is quite far from the location of the 20th notebook, and it is a dead end. Additionally, Angelica's retreat location (details below) is nearby, so if you leave it for later, you will face significant challenges.
      • As detailed below, in the remastered version, the deepest part of Corpus B and the long corridor of Corpus C have been opened, so it is no longer a dead end.
  • If you reach the deepest part of Corpus B, we recommend luring Angelica and then running back while making full use of your food and drink supplies.
    • Since the distance is long, you can pull her far away, and even if you are taken away by Principal, you will only be returned to the starting point, so you can almost ignore the disadvantages of running.
  • If there is a Chicken in the classroom, be sure to pick it up. Chicken is an important item that has the effect of retreating Angelica to a specific location, and having it or not makes a significant difference in the safety of exploration.
    • By holding Chicken and using it near her, you can offer it to her. In this case, she will retreat to the rest area of Corpus B (the location before the elevator) to eat it. After retreating, she will stay there for a while and then resume her pursuit.
    • In the latter half, her speed increases, making it difficult to maintain distance, and her footsteps become inaudible, making it hard to detect her approach (details below). Therefore, this item, which allows you to easily ensure long-term safety by simply waiting for her to come and then offering it, has a very powerful effect.
    • Additionally, since using it when she is not nearby does not waste it, repeatedly using it in advance can eliminate the risk of being killed by her. It is particularly effective in the latter half when her footsteps are no longer audible. However, be careful not to accidentally throw it away in the trash bin.
    • However, Chicken is only effective up to three times. On the fourth use, after resuming pursuit, she will track at an incredible speed capable of destroying doors, rendering Chicken ineffective.
    • Chicken is a powerful item, but it has a low appearance rate and a limited number of uses, so if you obtain it, try to save it for as long as possible until the latter half of the game.
  • In the inner part of the Corpus A route, there is a room labeled “19.” The door to this room cannot be opened unless you have collected 19 notebooks.
    • Additionally, there is always a notebook inside the room, so players who have collected 19 notebooks will inevitably come here to obtain the final notebook.
    • However, there is a possibility that notebooks will also be placed in the surrounding rooms, and considering that Angelica's speed will increase in the latter half and the Chicken may run out, it is not recommended to avoid the Corpus A route entirely until the very end. It is better to collect the notebooks in the surrounding rooms along the way, return, and then come back here again after collecting the 19th notebook.
    • As mentioned in the notebook section above, the 20th notebook has a number written on the bottom. This number is necessary to clear the level, so be sure to remember it.
  • For the Corpus C long corridor, we recommend entering from the Corpus C route at the starting point rather than from the side with Samara's room. This is because the former carries the risk of a head-on collision with Jimmy, while the latter allows you to be pushed from behind.
  • Once you collect a certain number of notebooks (16 in Boi mode, 12 in Default mode, and 6 in Brainiac mode), Angelica will start walking quietly, saying something fu*k like “Let's add something more exciting,” just like Viktor in AEwVS. Once this happens, her footsteps will no longer be audible, and you will no longer be able to detect her approach. Therefore, after her footsteps become inaudible, you will need to explore while estimating her position.
    • If you're unsure whether she's nearby, just spam using Chicken for now. This will at least eliminate the risk of dying. However, since you can't use items while solving the notebooks, it's best to stay put, use Chicken on her, and then solve the notebooks.
  • Once you collect all 20 notebooks, the darkness disappears, and Angelica stops chasing you and starts talking to you. She congratulates you on collecting all the notebooks, but also tells you that it's not over yet and orders you to leave this floor. This is how you end up in the final chase with her. Note that during this time, the door to leave the room is locked, so you have to listen to her and wait.
    • Once she finishes speaking, the BGM will begin to play, and when the music intensifies, the door lock will be released, and she will appear, kicking down the door at the back of the room and immediately beginning her pursuit at full speed. Therefore, once the music starts playing, you should position yourself in front of the exit door so that you can escape the room at any time. Under no circumstances should you remain near the door at the back of the room.
    • When the music briefly stops and the sound of the door being kicked down is heard, the final chase begins. Immediately open the door and dash out of the room. Players must escape to the exit at the starting point. At this point, she will chase at nearly the same speed as the player, so you must keep running continuously to avoid being caught. During the final chase, you can run continuously without consuming stamina, so feel free to sprint at full speed.
      • Note that experienced AEwVS players are more likely to get caught, but the escape route is the exit, not the elevator. If you go to the elevator at this stage, nothing will happen, and you will be cornered and killed, so be careful.
    • All you have to do is keep running to the exit, but during the final chase, debris will appear in front of Samara's room, blocking the path, so you must go through the long corridor of Corpus C. Also, the area near the starting point is complex due to multiple connected pathways, so be careful not to end up anywhere other than the exit. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to simulate the route beforehand to confirm.
    • Once you reach the exit, you need to enter the number written at the bottom of the last notebook to open the exit. If you've escaped properly, you'll have plenty of time, so take your time and enter the number calmly. If you enter it correctly before she catches up, you'll clear the level.
      • However, even if you enter the number correctly, she will definitely be right behind you by the time you finish entering it. However, once you finish entering the number from the notebook, her anger will subside, and her red eyes will return to normal. In this case, she will tell you to go to the next floor instead of the exit, and instead of killing you, she will pick you up and throw you into the elevator. Therefore, you will end up proceeding to the next floor while listening to her words. When the elevator doors close and the screen goes black, the level is officially cleared.
  • By the way, the Blue Door Key is inside the trash can next to the vending machine in Angelica's retreat room. However, it has no use in this level, so it's no different from trash items like Used Cans. In fact, if Principal finds you with it, you'll be taken away, so it's even worse.
  • In the remastered version, most of the graphics and music in the level have been completely revamped. As a result, the atmosphere of the level has also changed significantly. Additionally, the map has been slightly altered, with the deepest part of Corpus B and the long corridor of Corpus C now connected. This allows you to pass through Corpus B during the final chase or head from Corpus B to Corpus C or Corpus A.
    • Most of the traditional strategies still work, but there is a possibility that Angelica, who was defeated with Chicken, may catch up to you sooner than before by using the newly opened route, so some caution is necessary. Be especially careful when approaching the long corridor of Corpus C after defeating her.
  • In version 1.2 of the remastered version, a treatment room and Nurse have been added to the Corpus B spiral corridor.
    • The Nurse is a character who restores your sanity. If you talk to her and then use the Medical equipment that appears during the level in front of her, she will fully restore your sanity. The Medical equipment does not appear until you talk to her, so it's a good idea to talk to her first, even if you don't need to restore your sanity.
  • In version 1.23 of the remastered version, a secret room was added to the rotating path of Corpus B.
    • Inside the secret room is a Mystery Book, and to open the door to this room, you need a Blue Door Key, so finally this useless key has a use.
    • As mentioned earlier, the Blue Door Key is inside the trash can next to the vending machine in Angelica's retreat room.
    • The Mystery Book contains Angelica's secret, and obtaining it unlocks a Steam achievement, so it might be worth getting and reading at least once.
  • In the remastered version 1.3.0, fire alarms were added. They are installed on walls throughout the area, and pressing the button will trigger an alarm. After that, you will be taken to the Principal's office for no reason. Since pressing it only has drawbacks, it's probably best not to press it under normal circumstances.
  • As mentioned earlier, the notebook screen was completely redesigned in version 1.4.0 of the remastered version. Along with this, the difficulty of the levels has also changed slightly. In particular, the TRUNCATE value now fluctuates, and the difference in difficulty is more pronounced in Brainiac mode.

Side Note

  • The first Angelica greeting actually contains elements of respect for AEwVS. Not only is the structure of the story similar, but the ending is particularly noteworthy. The subtitles toward the end read, “After you finish, I'll told you what to do next.” While the phrase “I'll told you what to do next” is grammatically incorrect, it actually matches Viktor's greeting in the original version of AEwVS: “And when you finish, come back, and I will told you what to do next.” The fact that such a subtle detail was included as a nod to the original shows the author's love for AEwVS.
    • However, in the remastered version, this grammatical error was corrected, and the nod to the original was toned down.
  • In the remastered version, the ambient music that plays after giving an incorrect answer seems to be the same as the original, but with the pitch altered. However, it cuts off abruptly in the middle and the volume is unusually low, making it sound off.
