In the early morning of the 29th June 1937 Lieutenant Colonel Mihara gave the order to conquer the by the Russians claimed small isle Kanchatzu in the Amur river. The Soviets repelled the attack with the help of the Amur flotilla.

On August 22, 1937, the Japanese 3rd, 8th, and 11th Divisions made an amphibious assault under the cover of naval bombardment and proceeded to land in Chuanshakou and Baoshan.Japanese landings in northeast Shanghai suburban areas meant that many Chinese troops, who were deployed in Shanghai's urban center, had to be redeployed to the coastal regions to counter the landings. Chinese defense was stubborn even in the face of such overwhelming firepower.Starting the night of October 26, the Chinese began withdrawing from Shanghai urban center. Zhang Boting returned to the 88th's divisional headquarters at Sihang Warehouse to lead the defense.

On June 9, 1938 the Nationalist troops under Chiang Kai-Shek broke the levees holding back the river Huang He near the village of Huayuankou in Henan causing major flooding. The goal of the operation was to stop the advancing Japanese troops following a strategy of using water as a substitute for soldiers.
