**概要

築城は平安時代。藤原秀郷または藤原宗円により築城されたという
その後は長らく宗円の流れをくむ宇都宮氏の居城であったが、1597年豊臣秀吉により突如改易、翌年蒲生秀行が入城
江戸時代には譜代大名が代わる代わる入城。特に本多正純時代に大改修されたが正純は宇都宮城釣天井事件により1622年改易
明治維新の際に戊辰戦争の戦地となり、藩校を残し焼失
