伝説上によれば、この祈りは西暦50年に遡るもので、1505年に教皇ユリウス2世から、戦いに出ようとしていた神聖ローマ帝国皇帝カール5世（シャルル皇帝）に送らたとされる。
しかしながら、現在わかっていることは、この
祈祷文が裁可を得たのは1950年のことであり、ピッツバーグの司教
Hugh Boyle によるものだということである。

Oh, St. Joseph,
whose protection is so great, so prompt, so strong,
before the throne of God,
I place in you all my interests and desires.
Oh, St. Joseph,
do assist me by your powerful intercession,
and obtain for me from your Divine Son
all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power,
I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most Loving of Fathers.
Oh, St. Joseph,
I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms;
I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart.

ああ神の玉座の御前にいとも偉大にして強くかつ速やかなる御保護を給う聖ヨゼフ、我は御身にわが関心と望みの全てを委ね奉る。ああ聖ヨゼフ、御身の力強き御取り次ぎによりてわれを助け、われらの主イエズス・キリストによりて、御身の神なる御子により、あらゆる霊的な祝福を我がために乞い求め給え。
かくて、ここ御身の天的御力の下に、われ、教父たちの愛への感謝と尊敬を捧げえんことを。
