ユダヤの古い詩に、「大空を紙とし、海原を墨とし、木の枝を筆とし、世人を集めて、主の愛記さば、紙も足らじ。」という一節がある。フレデリック・M・レーマン(Frederic Lehman)は労働者だったが、彼が精神病院で働いていた頃、患者が無くなり遺品を整理している最中、患者の病室の壁に鉛筆でこの一節が書かれているのを見つけたという。レーマンはこの詩に感動して、これを発展させて歌にしようと考えた。彼は昼休みにレモンが入っていた空き箱の上に座って詩を書いたという。そして、1917年にこの讃美歌を完成させ、発表した。

1.
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain:
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,

And were the skies of parchment made,
